Amsterdam protest against G8, capitalism & assassination
by Jeroen Monday, Jul. 23, 2001 at 9:26 AM mail: resiste@dds.nl

Sunday afternoon at 15.00 hrs some 250 to 300 people gathered at the Spui square in the centre of Amsterdam. Reason was their repudiation against and anger for the police violence that had been deployed in Genova the last couple of days and the cold blooded assassination of Carlo. Also was the demo against G8, the EC, and all other forms of corporate business and repression and for a world without domination of whatever kind.

Among them where some of the Dutch demonstrators who had just returned by bus from Genova. The manifestation had been called for on saturday afternoon via different activist mailing lists. For Dutch circumstances this was a good turnout for a demo so shortly before announced. Although the demo call came from the autonomous/anarchist/squatscene there turned up quite a few Trotskyists from the International Socialists (affiliated with the English SWP - Socialist Workers Party) who tried to attract all media attention, as they had been doing the last couple of days. Their fixation on media coverage is noteworthy. They organized two busses to Genova in which also a couple of main press journalists were allowed to travel. It could be prevented that they took the lead of the demo. Chanting "All cops are bastards, ACAB", No Justice no peace, fuck the police", "G8 killers", "Berlusconi and Co. assassins", "EU fuck off", etc, the demo went through the center of Amsterdam to finally reach the Italian Consulate. Some speaches were made, flowers and a cross planted in the front garden, and one minute of silence. During the demo the Amsterdam cops kept low profile except for the `normal' companionship of plain cloth officers and a couple of ordinary cops.
