The author of last week’s Catholic ruling on gay marriages and partnerships was a member of Hitler’s Youth in the Second World War, it has emerged.

According to reports over the weekend in The Sunday Times, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, who wrote the guidance to Catholics and Catholic politicians that described gay relationships as “deviant and evil”, was a member of Hitler’s Youth in his home region of Bavaria, Germany.

Despite leaving the Nazis in 1945, Ratzinger is famed for maintaining harshly right wing ideals, and is nicknamed “the enforcer” in the Vatican City, the paper reported.

He holds contempt for any sort of liberalism, which he sees as demolishing the moral fibre of the modern world, and reflects the Pope’s own fears that an acceptance of gay rights, both culturally and legally, will lead to the demise of morality on a whole.

In last week’s 12 page document, he wrote that homosexuality goes “against the natural law”, that gay couples adopting “does a violence to the child” and that same sex unions are “evil”.

Ratzinger was part of Hitler’s Youth until 1945, when he deserted, claiming that Hitler was the Antichrist, the paper claims. He was held as a prisoner of war by American forces after the war, before making his way through the Catholic ranks.

He was made the “enforcer” in 1981 and has a reputation for quashing dissenters throughout the Church.

He is also well known for condemning other religions as false hope and “auto-erotic spirituality” as well as accusing the media of exaggerating the extent of paedophilia in the American Church.

Se adesso Ratzinger alias Benedictus XVI ha 78 anni, ne aveva soltanto 18 nel 45. E con lui nella HJ c'era probabilmente una maggioranza di adolescenti tedeschi. Il problema è il suo atteggiamento sistematicamente reazionario, non soltanto in questioni di dottrina ma anche sociali, di vita privata.

Guardiamo il lato positivo: se nel '45 aveva 18 anni, adesso ne ha già 78...
