National Archive Docs Prove Bush Family-Nazi Ties

WASHINGTON - After 60 years of denial by the U.S. media, newly-uncovered government documents in The National Archives and Library of Congress reveal that Prescott Bush, the grandfather of President George W. Bush, served as a business partner and U.S. banking operative of the financial architect of the Nazi war machine from 1926 until 1942, when Congress took aggressive action against Bush and his "enemy national" partners.
The documents also show that Bush and his colleagues, according to reports from the U.S. Department of the Treasury, tried to conceal their financial alliance with German industrialist Fritz Thyssen, a steel and coal baron who, beginning in the mid-1920s, personally funded Adolf Hitler's rise to power by the subversion of democratic principle and German law.
Furthermore, the declassified records demonstrate that Bush and his associates, who included E. Roland Harriman, younger brother of American icon W. Averell Harriman, and George Herbert Walker, President Bush's maternal great-grandfather, continued their dealings with the German industrial tycoon for nearly a year after the U.

NO STORY?
For six decades these historical facts have gone unreported by the mainstream U.S. media. The essential facts have appeared on the Internet and in relatively obscure books, but were dismissed by the media and Bush family as undocumented diatribes. This story has also escaped the attention of "official" Bush biographers, Presidential historians and publishers of U.S. history books covering World War II and its aftermath.
The White House did not respond to phone calls seeking comment.
The unraveling of the web of Bush-Harriman-Thyssen U.S. enterprises, all of which operated out of the same suite of offices at 39 Broadway in New York under the supervision of Prescott Bush, began with a story that ran simultaneously in the New York Herald-Tribune and Washington Post on July 31, 1942.
"Hitler's Angel Has $3 Million in U.S. Bank," declared the front-page Herald-Tribune headline. The lead paragraph characterized Fritz Thyssen as "Adolf Hitler's original patron a decade ago." In fact, the steel and coal magnate had aggressively supported and funded Hitler since October 1923, according to Thyssen's autobiography, "I Paid Hitler." In that book, Thyssen also acknowledges his direct personal relationships with Adolf Hitler, Joseph Goebbels and Rudolf Hess.
The Herald-Tribune also cited unnamed sources, who suggested Thyssen's U.S. "nest egg" in fact belonged to "Nazi bigwigs" including Goebbels, Hermann Goering, Heinrich Himmler, or even Hitler himself.
BUSINESS IS BUSINESS
The "bank," founded in 1924 by W. Averell Harriman on behalf of Thyssen and his Bank voor Handel en Scheepvaart N.V. of Holland, was Union Banking Corporation (UBC) of New York City.
According to government documents, it was in reality a clearing house for a number of Thyssen-controlled enterprises and assets, including as many as a dozen individual businesses.
UBC also bought and shipped overseas gold, steel, coal, and U.S. Treasury bonds. The company's activities were administered for Thyssen by a Netherlands-born, naturalized U.S. citizen named Cornelis Lievense, who served as president of UBC. Roland Harriman was chairman and Prescott Bush a managing director.
The Herald-Tribune article did not identify Bush or Harriman as executives of UBC, or Brown Brothers Harriman, in which they were partners, as UBC's private banker.
A confidential FBI memo from that period suggested, without naming the Bush and Harriman families, that politically prominent individuals were about to come under official U.S. government scrutiny as Hitler's plunder of Europe continued unabated.
After the "Hitler's Angel" article was published Bush and Harriman made no attempts to divest themselves of the controversial Thyssen financial alliance, nor did they challenge the newspaper report that UBC was, in fact, a de facto Nazi front organization in the U.S.
Instead, the government documents show, Bush and his partners increased their subterfuge to try to conceal the true nature and ownership of their various businesses, particularly after the U.S. entered the war.
The documents also disclose that Cornelis Lievense, Thyssen's personal appointee to oversee U.S. matters for his Rotterdam-based Bank voor Handel en Scheepvaart N.V., via UBC for nearly two decades, repeatedly denied to U.S. government investigators any knowledge of the ownership of the Netherlands bank or the role of Thyssen in it. Brown Brothers Harriman sent letters to the government seeking reconsideration of the seizures by using false information.
UBC's original group of business associates included George Herbert Walker, President Bush's maternal great-grandfather, who had a relationship with the Harriman family that began in 1919. In 1922, Walker and W. Averell Harriman traveled to Berlin to set up the German branch of their banking and investment operations, which were largely based on critical war resources such as steel and coal.
The Walker-Harriman-created German industrial alliance also included partnership with another German titan who supported Hitler's rise, Friedrich Flick, who partnered with Thyssen in the German Steel Trust that forged the Nazi war machine. For his role in using slave labor and his own steel, coal and arms resources to build Hitler's war effort, Flick was convicted at the Nuremberg trials and sentenced to prison.
THE FAMILY BUSINESS
In 1926, after Prescott Bush had married Walker's daughter, Dorothy, Walker brought Bush in as a vice president of the private banking and investment firm of W.A. Harriman & Co., also located in New York.
Bush became a partner in the firm that later became Brown Brothers Harriman and the largest private investment bank in the world. Eventually, Bush became a director of and stockholder in UBC.
However, the government documents note that Bush, Harriman, Lievense and the other UBC stockholders were in fact "nominees," or phantom shareholders, for Thyssen and his Holland bank, meaning that they acted at the direct behest of their German client.
SEIZED
On October 20, 1942, under authority of the Trading with the Enemy Act, the U.S. Congress seized UBC and liquidated its assets after the war. The seizure is confirmed by Vesting Order No. 248 in the U.S. Office of the Alien Property Custodian and signed by U.S. Alien Property Custodian Leo T. Crowley.
In August, under the same authority, Congress had seized the first of the Bush-Harriman-managed Thyssen entities, Hamburg-American Line, under Vesting Order No. 126, also signed by Crowley.
Eight days after the seizure of UBC, Congress invoked the Trading with the Enemy Act again to take control of two more Bush-Harriman-Thyssen businesses - Holland-American Trading Corp. (Vesting Order No. 261) and Seamless Steel Equipment Corp. (Vesting Order No. 259).
The documents from the Archives also show that the Bushes and Harrimans shipped valuable U.S. assets, including gold, coal, steel and U.S. Treasury bonds, to their foreign clients overseas between 193133, as Hitler engineered his rise to power.
STILL NO STORY?
Since 1942, the information has not appeared in any U.S. news coverage of any Bush political campaign, nor has it been included in any of the major Bush family biographies. It was, however, covered extensively in "George H.W. Bush: The Unauthorized Biography," by Webster Tarpley and Anton Chaitkin. Chaitkin's father served as an attorney in the 1940s for some of the victims of the Bush-Harriman-Thyssen businesses.
The book gave a detailed, accurate accounting of the Bush family's long Nazi affiliation, but no mainstream U.S. media entity reported on or even investigated the allegations, despite careful documentation by the authors. Major booksellers declined to distribute the book, which was dismissed by Bush supporters as biased and untrue. Its authors struggled even to be reviewed in reputable newspapers. That the book was published by Lyndon LaRouche's organization undoubtedly made it easier to dismiss, but does not change the facts.
In the 1990s, former U.S. Justice Department Nazi war crimes prosecutor John Loftus, now honorary president of the Florida Holocaust Museum, wrote a book and launched a web site (http://www.john-loftus.com) which did breakthrough reporting, including establishing the link between Prescott Bush, Consolidated Silesian Steel Corporation and forced labor at Auschwitz. Although the widely-respected Loftus established a successful international speaking career with his information, no U.S. newspaper or major TV news program acknowledged his decade of work, nor did he ever see many of the recently released documents.
Meanwhile, the mainstream media have apparently made no attempt since World War II to either verify or disprove the allegations of Nazi collaboration against the Bush family. Instead, they have attempted to dismiss or discredit such Internet sites or "unauthorized" books without any journalistic inquiry or research into their veracity.
LOYAL DEFENDERS
The National Review ran an essay on September 1 by their White House correspondent Byron York, entitled "Annals of Bush-Hating." It begins mockingly: "Are you aware of the murderous history of George W. Bush -indeed, of the entire Bush family? Are you aware of the president's Nazi sympathies? His crimes against humanity? And do you know, by the way, that George W. Bush is a certifiable moron?" York goes on to discredit the "Bush is a moron" IQ hoax, but fails to disprove the Nazi connection.
The more liberal Boston Globe ran a column September 29 by Reason magazine's Cathy Young in which she referred to "Bush-o-phobes on the Internet" who "repeat preposterous claims about the Bush family's alleged Nazi connections."
POLES TACKLE THE TOPIC
Newsweek Polska, the magazine's Polish edition, published a short piece on the "Bush Nazi past" in its March 5, 2003 edition. The item reported that "the Bush family reaped rewards from the forced-labor prisoners in the Auschwitz concentration camp," according to a copyrighted English-language translation from Scoop Media. The story also reported the seizure of the various Bush-Harriman-Thyssen businesses.
STILL NOT INTERSTED
Major U.S. media outlets, including ABC News, NBC News, CNN, The New York Times, Washington Post, Washington Times, Los Angeles Times and Miami Herald, as well as Knight-Ridder Newspapers, have repeatedly declined to investigate the story when information regarding discovery of the documents was presented to them beginning Friday, August 29. Newsweek U.S. correspondent Michael Isikoff, famous for his reporting of big scoops during the Clinton-Lewinsky sexual affair of the 1990s, declined twice to accept an exclusive story based on the documents from the archives.
AFTERMATH
In 1952, Prescott Bush was elected to the U.S. Senate, with no press accounts about his well-concealed Nazi past.
There is no record of any U.S. press coverage of the Bush-Nazi connection during any political campaigns conducted by George Herbert Walker Bush, Jeb Bush, or George W. Bush, with the exception of a brief mention in an unrelated story in the Sarasota Herald Tribune in November 2000 and a brief but inaccurate account in The Boston Globe in 2001.

Even though his memoir called "The Conspirators: Secrets of an Iran Contra Insider" hasn't sold as many copies as "Treason" by Ann Coulter, Al Martin's book tells the truth. It's based on first-hand knowledge of government fraud and other illicit covert activities of the Shadow Government.

Lying Pays Off: Neo-Cons Learn from Nazi Leaders

America's manipulative neo-conservatives, who support unending aggression against any country that does not succumb to United States political, economic, and military control and who, themselves, seized power in Washington through electoral malfeasance, are taking a page from Nazi Germany's leaders in their quest for world domination.
It is no coincidence that the neo-cons are in fact worried about comparisons between their policies and those of Hitler.
Ed Gernon, the Canadian executive producer of the upcoming CBS miniseries, "Hitler: The Rise of Evil," was fired when he suggested similarities between the methods used by both Hitler and Bush to wipe away civil liberties by playing on popular fear.
The Nazi-like campaign against Gernon was launched by the New York Post and TV Guide, both owned by proto-fascist Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation.
After being caught lying about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction to prove their flimsy case that Iraq was a world class threat, the neo-cons then planted fabricated documents in the rubble of Iraqi intelligence and secret police facilities.

Through a media laundering process, "discovered" documents were handed over to rightwing outlets owned by such slash and burn media moguls as Murdoch, Conrad Black, and Sun Myung Moon.
We are now being fed information that captured Iraqi intelligence documents 'prove' that France assisted escaping members of Saddam Hussein's government by handing them French passports in Syria.
This follows repeated allegations that other 'documents' proved French (and Russian and German) intelligence cooperation with Iraq's intelligence service before the war.
Syria has been accused of accepting Iraq's phony weapons of mass destruction.
Iran is accused of helping al-Qaeda (its most bitter enemy).
Hitler used false evidence and phony rhetoric to justify his invasions of Danzig, Austria, Czechoslovakia, and Poland.
American ambassadors in New Zealand, Norway, Turkey, Greece, Canada, Mexico, Barbados, Jamaica, Brazil, Belgium, Chile, and Luxembourg have acted like Nazi German Foreign Minister Joachim Von Ribbentrop's bellicose ambassadors in bullying nations that failed to support the US war on Iraq.
France faces being kicked out of NATO military planning meetings, Germany with a loss of US military bases, Belgium with the loss of NATO's headquarters, and Canada, Chile, and Mexico with trade sanctions.
There are lies, damned lies, and Ahmad Chalabi.
The leader of the Iraqi National Congress, stooge of the neo-cons, and a convicted bank embezzler, is now aiming his wrath at Jordan.
Chalabi, who bilked the American taxpayer out of millions of dollars from State Department and CIA budgets in order to fight his self-styled struggle against Saddam from the restaurants of London's Mayfair District and the clothiers of Savile Row, now claims that recently "found" documents implicating Jordan's Royal Family in Saddam's spider's web.
Of course, it was a Jordanian court that found Chalabi guilty of stealing $300 million from the country's Petra Bank and which sentenced him to over 20 years' hard labor.
It is surprising that it took this Gollum-like sycophantic creature so long to accuse the Jordanians of being in bed with Saddam. Of course, Chalabi will not admit that, in the 1970s, when he was a math professor at the American University of Beirut, he served as agent for the Shah of Iran's feared SAVAK secret police.
So much for Chalabi's 'democratic' credentials and his support for using Iraq as a base for the United States to attack Iran and install the son of the Shah upon a resurrected Peacock Throne.
Chalabi fits in well with the other congenital liars who now lead the United States government.
Chief among them are those who prevaricated at every turn about why the United States went to war against Iraq. They first said the war was to rid the world of weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear, chemical, and biological.
When no nuclear weapons were found and after a document purporting that Iraq purchased uranium from the West African nation of Niger was shown to be fake, the list of reasons for the war was pared down to the chem-bio weapons.
When that story was shown to be untrue, the story changed to: "We had to liberate the Iraqi people from a ruthless tyrant."
The chief truth manipulators were President George Bush himself, Vice President Dick Cheney, White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer, National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice, Defense Secretary Donald Rumfeld, his obedient 'Igor,' Paul Wolfowitz, and think tank denizens and administration consultants Richard Perle, Newt Gingrich, and Michael Ledeen.
Why does the Bush administration lie so much?
It is mainly because Bush's Svengali-like political adviser, Karl Rove, has taken to heart the advice of Nazi Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels: "If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it."
Rove has lived by this tenet throughout his political career. During the 2000 GOP primary campaign, it was Rove's hand that was behind vicious rumors about Senator John McCain's prisoner of war record, his adopted daughter, his marital fidelity, and even his sexual orientation.
Rove's guns were then turned on Vice President Al Gore in the general election with similar lies about the Vice President's Vietnam service and Senate voting record.
A true symbiotic relationship exists between Rove and the neo-cons. Rove provides for them a nurturing host - the Pentagon - in which to operate, procreate politically, and periodically ejaculate disinformation.
No sooner had the fake Iraqi intelligence documents 'exposing' links between Saddam on one hand and Germany, Russia, France, and British Labor Party Member of Parliament George Galloway on the other been 'revealed,' other 'documents' fingered former UN weapons inspector Scott Ritter, Washington Democratic Representative Jim McDermott, former House Democratic Whip David Bonior, Michigan's antiwar Representative John Conyers, Michigan Democratic Senator Carl Levin, and the 1996 Clinton-Gore campaign as similarly being linked to Saddam.
It is fitting and timely that the Senate recently disclosed files from the hearings of the disgraced Republican Senator Joseph McCarthy. He also emulated Goebbels in using the "big lie" tactic. Rove and the neo-cons relish in the big lie tactic. It is their lifeblood. Without it, they would be impotent.
The neo-cons' obsessive use of the lie means that whatever they state, the opposite is true. They are the liars. Those who call them on their lies are the truth sayers.
The neo-cons now say that 170,000 priceless ancient artifacts were not stolen from Iraq's National Museum. They say Saddam and his henchmen stole them. The artifacts were stolen by thieves under the watchful eye of American troops. That is the truth.
The neo-cons are lying. It is simply as binary an equation as that. All the lies of the neo-cons should be viewed in the same binary manner.
Sadly, the big lie may soon be turned on Secretary of State Colin Powell.
After Powell's deputy Richard Armitage counterattacked after New Gingrich used the neo-con fortress, the American Enterprise Institute, to launch a broadside against Powell and the State Department, the neo-cons are again getting ready to use their big lie weapon, a virtual weapon of crass destruction.
The Washington rumor circuit is rife with speculation that one of the many rightwing muck mills will soon 'reveal' an extra-marital affair involving Powell. These days, it does not matter whether such rumors are based on fact or not.
Rove prefers the politics of personal destruction and Powell is currently target number one for the neo-cons and their White House nurturers.
Lying and character assassination have paid off handsomely for the neo-cons.
Another Nazi leader provided the neo-cons with a blueprint for the strategy seen in their repeated attacks on those who dare question the party line.
Their targets range from the Dixie Chicks, Senator Robert Byrd, Bill Maher, and Michael Moore, to Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon, to ABC News anchor Peter Jennings and MSNBC reporter Ashleigh Banfield.
Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering, before committing suicide at the Nuremberg Trials, appeared to be advising the future neo-cons: "Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."
A little advice for the neo-cons and their nurturers: every day you create more and more enemies within the United States and abroad. Governments, non-governmental organizations, political parties and social movements, labor unions and business interests, and religious organizations and student groups are talking to each other and are realizing they have a common purpose.
That purpose is to drive the neo-con threat away from the power centers of the world.
They are beginning to understand intermeshing dependencies and are connecting the dots: Enron, Hollinger, UNOCAL, Halliburton, Carlyle Group, Trireme, L-3, SAIC, etc.
Your aggressive policies are upsetting the global balance of power, destroying economies, threatening international trade, and first and foremost, killing innocent people.
Like the Nazis in Nuremberg, you will, one day, face an accounting for your crimes.
As with the Nazis who stood in the docket in Nuremberg, few, if any, will be in the mood to grant you clemency or mercy.

Grassroots 'Impeach Bush' Movement Grows Quickly

In the last week, the movement to impeach George W. Bush has entered a new and exciting phase.
The call for Bush's impeachment, which we have begun as a mass grassroots campaign, is increasingly the focus of commentary in the electronic and print media, on the internet, and in swelling street demonstrations that have confronted George W. Bush as he engages in a whirlwind fundraising tour.
While George W. Bush was handed millions of dollars from his wealthy constituency at fundraising events this past week, the impeachment movement made its voice heard in the streets outside.
On Friday, June 27, thousands of demonstrators, including anti-war activists and members of the VoteToImpeach.org campaign, confronted Bush on two separate occasions, in Los Angeles and San Francisco.
The effectiveness of the demonstrators resonated far beyond Bush's ballrooms and was reported by media around the world.

"Demonstrators shouting for US President George W. Bush's impeachment gathered outside a hotel here where the president was helping raise $3.6 million for his re-election campaign. The protesters accused Bush of lying about the presence of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in Iraq, a central justification for the US-British invasion of Iraq in March," reads the Daily Telegraph and Melbourne Herald in Australia and many other news reports around the world.
The demonstrators' calls for impeachment were so loud and spirited that they could be heard throughout the hotel in Los Angeles while Bush conducted his $2,000 per plate fund-raiser.
At the same time that Bush told a crowd of south California's elite that "I'm loosening up," the lobby of the Century Plaza Hotel ballroom was echoing with the chants of "Stop Bush!" "Bush Lied!" and "Where are the Weapons of Mass Destruction?" and "Impeach!"

Bush was also confronted by thousands of demonstrators in San Francisco where he held a fund-raising luncheon on Friday.
The Associated Press reports, "Many protestors called for Bush's impeachment for what they called his misleading the nation into a war with Iraq."
On June 23, thousands of demonstrators gathered outside the Sheraton Hotel in midtown Manhattan for another Bush fund-raiser.
Associated Press reported that many demonstrators were collecting signatures on the http://www.VoteToImpeach.org petitions calling for Bush's impeachment. You can download petitions calling for the impeachment of George Bush.
Write a Letter to the Editor
One of the few ways the issue of impeachment and faith in the Constitution can find their way into the corporate controlled media is through Letters to the Editor.
Help the truth set the American people free and take back the Constitution.
Write newspapers and periodicals, large and small, proclaiming the duty of those who care about truth and the Constitution to demand the impeachment of President Bush and his chosen few.
Bush and Co. have lied about weapons of mass destruction and the grave threat Iraq posed to the United States. They have violated the Constitution, the Nuremberg Charter and Geneva Conventions by waging wars of aggression against Afghanistan, Iraq and threatening other nations. They have summarily executed and killed tens of thousands of people while leading a growing number, now over 200, young American men and women in the U.S. Armed Forces to death in their criminal war and occupation of Iraq. They have attacked the civil rights and civil liberties of the people of the United States in their efforts to tear apart the Bill of Rights and reverse decades of hard-won social justice accomplishments.

There was a picture on the front page of the New York Times on Tuesday, July 8. It showed several American soldiers in Iraq sitting in utter dejection as they were informed by their battalion commander that none of them were going home anytime soon, and no one knew exactly when they were going home at all.
PFC Harrison Grimes sat in the center of this photo with his chin in his hand, staring at ground that was thousands of miles from his family and friends. A soldier caught in the picture just over PFC Grimes' shoulder had a look on his face that could break rocks.
212 of PFC Grimes' fellow soldiers have died in Iraq, and 1,044 more have been wounded.
The war created chaos in the cities, and it seems clear now that very little in the way of preparation was made to address the fact that invasion leads to social bedlam, not to mention a lot of shooting.
Last Sunday, CNN's Judy Woodruff showed a clip of a Sergeant Charles Pollard, who said, "All we are here is potential people to be killed and sitting ducks.

According to the numbers, almost two thirds of the soldiers killed in Iraq since May 1 died in "non-combat related" mishaps like accidental weapons discharges, accidental detonations of unexploded ordnance, and questionable car crashes.
There are some in the world who might take comfort from the fact that only one third of the dead since May came from snipers or bombs or rocket-propelled grenades. Dead is dead, however. There is no comforting them.
A significant portion of the dead and wounded came after Bush performed his triumphant swagger across the deck of an aircraft carrier that was parked just outside San Diego bay. Those dead and wounded came because the Bush administration's shoddy planning for this whole event left the troopers on the firing line wide open to the slow and debilitating bloodletting they have endured.
A significant portion of the dead and wounded came after Bush stuck his beady chin out on national television and said, "Bring 'em on!"
When a leader sends troops out into the field of battle, they become his responsibility. When his war planning is revealed to be profoundly faulty, flawed in ways that are getting men killed, he should not stick his banty rooster chest out to the cameras and speak with the hollow bravado of a man who knows he is several time zones away from the violence and bloodshed.
Such behavior is demonstrably criminal from a moral standpoint. The events that led to this reprehensible display were criminal in a far more literal sense.
Bush and the White House told the American people over and over again that Iraq was in possession of vast stockpiles of chemical, biological and nuclear weapons.
Bush and the White House said over and over again that this was a direct threat to the United States. Bush and the White House told the American people over and over again that Iraq was directly connected to al Qaeda terrorism, and would hand those terrible weapons over to the terrorists the first chance they got.
Bush and the White House told Congress the same thing. Very deliberately, Bush and the White House tied a war in Iraq to the attack of September 11.
It was all a lie. All of it.
When George W. Bush delivered his constitutionally-mandated State of the Union Address in January 2003, he stated flatly that Iraq was attempting to develop a nuclear weapons program. "The British government has learned," said Bush in his speech, "that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium in Africa." He delivered this proclamation on the basis of intelligence reports which claimed that Iraq was attempting to procure uranium from the African nation of Niger.
Vice President Cheney got the Niger ball rolling in a speech delivered August 26, 2002 when he said Saddam Hussein had "resumed his effort to acquire nuclear weapons."
As the data clearly shows, Mr. Cheney was a central player in the promulgation of the claim that Iraq was grubbing for uranium in Africa. This statement was the opening salvo.
CIA Director George Tenet made this same claim in a briefing to the Senate Intelligence Committee on September 24, 2002.
This briefing was the deciding factor for a number of Senatorial fence-sitters unsure about voting for war. Bush, in a speech delivered on the eve of the Congressional vote for war on Iraq, referenced the Niger uranium claims again when he raised the specter of a "mushroom cloud" just three sentences after evoking "The horror of September 11."
That sealed the deal. Congress voted for war, and a clear majority of the people supported the President.
In the last week, a blizzard of revelations from high-ranking members of the intelligence community has turned these Bush administration claims inside out.
It began with a New York Times editorial by Joseph Wilson, former US ambassador to several African nations. Wilson was dispatched in February of 2002 at the behest of Dick Cheney to investigate the veracity of the Niger evidence. Wilson spent eight days digging through the data, and concluded that the evidence was completely worthless. The documents in question which purportedly indicated Iraqi attempts to purchase uranium were crude forgeries.
Upon his return in February of 2002, Ambassador Wilson reported back to the people who sent him on his errand.
According to his editorial, the CIA, the State Department, the National Security Council and the Vice President's office were all informed that the Niger documents were forged. "That information was erroneous, and they knew about it well ahead of both the publication of the British white paper and the president's State of the Union address," said Wilson in a 'Meet the Press' interview last Sunday.
"I have little choice but to conclude that some of the intelligence related to Iraq's nuclear weapons program was twisted to exaggerate the Iraqi threat," Wilson wrote in his Times editorial. "A legitimate argument can be made that we went to war under false pretenses." He elaborated further in a Washington Post interview, saying, "It really comes down to the administration misrepresenting the facts on an issue that was a fundamental justification for going to war. It begs the question, what else are they lying about?"
Ambassador Wilson's claims are not easily dismissed. Wilson is a 23-year veteran of the foreign service who was the top diplomat in Baghdad before the first Gulf War.
In 1990, he was lauded by the first President Bush for his work. "What you are doing day in and day out under the most trying conditions is truly inspiring," cabled Bush Sr. "Keep fighting the good fight."
A great hue and cry has been raised as to the timing of the data delivery to the policy-makers.
Don Rumsfeld and Condoleezza Rice have both claimed they knew nothing of the forged Niger evidence, claiming the information was buried in the "bowels" of the intelligence services. Vice President Cheney's office has made similar demurrals. Obviously, the administration is attempting to scapegoat the CIA.
Given the nature of Wilson's claims, and given who he is, and given the fact that he was sent to Niger at the behest of Dick Cheney, it is absurd to believe the administration was never given the data they specifically asked for over a year before the war began, and eleven months before Bush's fateful State of the Union Address.
27-year CIA veteran Ray McGovern, writing in a recent editorial, described a conversation he had with a senior official who recently served at the National Security Council. "The fact that Cheney's office had originally asked that the Iraq-Niger report be checked out," said the official, "makes it inconceivable that his office would not have been informed of the results."
Wilson is not alone. Greg Thielmann served as Director of the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research until his retirement in September.
Mr. Thielmann has come forward recently to join Ambassador Wilson in denouncing the Bush administration's justifications for war in Iraq.
"I believe the Bush administration did not provide an accurate picture to the American people of the military threat posed by Iraq," said Thielmann on Wednesday. During his press conference, Mr. Thielmann said that, as of the commencement of military operations in March of 2003, "Iraq posed no imminent threat to either its neighbors or to the United States".
Mr. Thielmann also dismissed the oft-repeated claims of a connection between Iraq and al Qaeda. "This administration has had a faith-based intelligence attitude," he said.
Thielmann could have saved his breath, and Wilson could have saved himself a trip, if the Bush administration had bothered to pay any attention to the International Atomic Energy Agency. The IAEA's chief spokesman, Mark Gwozdecky, said on September 26, 2002 that no such evidence existed to support claims of a nascent Iraqi nuclear program.
White House spokesman Ari Fleischer on July 8 stood before the press corps and said the President's statements during the State of the Union address had been "incorrect."
Let us look at the timeline of this and consider the definition of "incorrect":
· February 2002: Ambassador Joseph Wilson is dispatched by Cheney to Niger to investigate Iraq-uranium claims. Eight days later, he reports back that the documentary evidence was a forgery;
· August 26, 2002: Dick Cheney claims Iraq is developing a nuclear program;
· September 24, 2002: CIA Director Tenet briefs the Senate Intelligence Committee on the reported Iraqi nuclear threat, using the Niger evidence to back his claims;
· September 26, 2002: The IAEA vigorously denies that any such nuclear program exists in Iraq;
· October 6, 2002: George W. Bush addresses the nation and threatens the American people with "mushroom clouds" delivered by Iraq, using the same Niger evidence;
· October 10, 2002: Congress votes for war in Iraq, based on the data delivered by Tenet and by the nuclear rhetoric from Bush four days prior;
· January 2003: George W. Bush, in his State of the Union Address, says, "The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium in Africa."
· March-April 2003: War in Iraq kills thousands of civilians and destabilizes the nation;
· April-July 2003: No evidence whatsoever of chemical, biological or nuclear weapons can be found in Iraq. 212 American soldiers have died, and 1,044 more have been wounded, as a guerilla war is undertaken by Iraqi insurgents;
· July 2003: Amid accusations from former intelligence officials, the Bush administration denies ever having known the Niger evidence was fake.
The Bush administration knew full well that their evidence was worthless, and still stood before the American people and told them it was fact.
Bush sent the Director of the CIA to the Senate under orders to use the same worthless evidence to cajole that body into war.
That is not being "incorrect." That is lying. In the context of Bush's position as President, and surrounded by hundreds of dead American soldiers piled alongside thousands of dead Iraqi civilians, that is a crime.
They know it, too.
A report hit the Reuters wires late Tuesday night announcing the arrest of an Iraqi intelligence official named Ahmad Khalil Ibrahim Samir al-Ani.
An unnamed "US official" claimed al-Ani had reportedly met with 9/11 ringleader Mohammed Atta in Prague just months before the attack. The old saw about Iraq working fist in glove with al Qaeda to bring about September 11 was back in the news.
According to the story, neither the CIA or the FBI could confirm this meeting had taken place. In fact, a Newsweek report from June 9 entitled "Where are the WMDs?" shows the FBI was completely sure such a meeting had never taken place.
The snippet below is from the Newsweek article; the 'Cabal' statement refers to Defense Secretary Rumsfeld and his coterie of hawks who have been all-out for war on Iraq since 1997:
"The Cabal was eager to find a link between Saddam and Al Qaeda, especially proof that Saddam played a role in the 9-11 attacks. The hard-liners at Defense seized on a report that Muhammad Atta, the chief hijacker, met in Prague in early April 2001 with an Iraqi intelligence official. Only one problem with that story, the FBI pointed out. Atta was traveling at the time between Florida and Virginia Beach, Va. (The bureau had his rental car and hotel receipts.)"
Amid the accusations that have exploded surrounding the revelations of Wilson, Thielmann and other high-ranking intelligence officials, comes now again reports of the infamous Iraq-al Qaeda connection, an administration claim meant to justify the war. As with the Niger forgery, however, it is too easily revealed to be utterly phony.
It reeks of desperation. This administration is learning a lesson that came to Presidents Nixon and Johnson with bitter tears:
Scapegoat the CIA at your mortal peril.
There are many who believe that blaming George W. Bush for the errors and gross behavior of his administration is tantamount to blaming Mickey Mouse for mistakes made by Disney. There is a great deal of truth to this.
Groups like Rumsfeld's 'Cabal,' and the right-wing think tanks so closely associated to the creation of administration foreign policy, are very much more in control of matters than Bush.
Yet Bush knew the facts of the matter. He allowed CIA Director Tenet to lie to Congress with his bare face hanging out in order to get that body to vote for war. He knew the facts and lied himself, on countless occasions, to an American people who have been loyally supporting him, even as he beats them over the head with the image of collapsing towers and massive death to stoke their fear and dread for his own purposes.
In doing these things, he consigned 212 American soldiers to death, along with thousands of innocent bystanders in Iraq. Given the current circumstances, there will be more dead to come.
There is no "The President wasn't told" justification available here, no Iran/Contra loophole.
He knew. He lied. His people knew. They lied.
Death knows no political affiliation, and a bloody lie is a bloody lie is a bloody lie.
The time has come for Congress to fulfill their constitutional duties in this matter, to defend the nation and the soldiers who live and die in her service.
The definition of 'is' has flown right out the window. This 'is' a crime. George W. Bush lied to the people, and lied to Congress. There are a lot of people dead because of it.
One Congresswoman, Democratic Representative Jan Schakowsky of Illinois, released a statement on July 8 that cuts right to the heart of the matter:
"After months of denials, President Bush has finally admitted that he misled the American public during his State of the Union address when he claimed that Iraq attempted to purchase uranium in Africa. That is why we need an independent commission to determine the veracity of the other so-called evidence used to convince the American people that war with Iraq was unavoidable.
"It is not enough for the White House to issue a statement saying that President Bush should not have used that piece of intelligence in his State of the Union address at a time when he was trying to convince the American people that invading Iraq was in our national security interests. Did the president know then what he says he only knows now? If not, why not, since that information was available at the highest level.
"What else did the Bush Administration lie about? What other faulty information did Administration officials, including President Bush, tell the American people and the world? Did the Bush Administration knowingly deceive us and manufacture intelligence in order to build public support for the invasion of Iraq? Did Iraq really pose an imminent threat to our nation? These questions must be answered. The American people deserve to know the full truth."
The voice of Rep. Schakowsky must be followed by others both within and without the majority.
If nothing is done about this, American justice is a sad, sorry, feeble joke.

It also ensured that irreparable harm was done to Hamilton and its lead shareholder, Catherine Austin Fitts, before they were allowed to know Ervin’s allegations against them, have a forum in which to address or refute any allegations, including as they were leaked to the press, or to know that no evidence of any wrongdoing had ever been produced.
Judge Sporkin is the former General Counsel of the CIA and former head of the Securities and Exchange Enforcement Division, both under William Casey.
Judge Sporkin was the CIA General Counsel during the Iran Contra period, including at the time that the CIA entered into the now infamous Memorandum of Understanding with the Department of Justice that permitted it to not report narcotics trafficking by CIA assets.
The Memorandum of Understanding between the CIA and DOJ was published as part of the declassified two volume report by the CIA Inspector General confirming the “Dark Alliance” allegations regarding CIA complicit narcotics trafficking.
In early March 1998, Judge Stanley Sporkin approved the court takeover of Hamilton’s office during which Hamilton’s software tools and databases were destroyed or seized by the court. This included the maps of high defaults on HUD mortgages in areas targeted by alleged CIA narcotics trafficking.
While Hamilton was locked out of its offices and was overwhelmed by managing the workload related to an effort by government investigators to falsify “evidence” while controlling and trashing Hamilton’s offices and systems, in hearings on Volume 1 on March 15th, 1998, CIA Inspector General Hitz disclosed the existence of this secret agreement between the CIA and then Reagan Attorney General William French-Smith.
On October 8th, 1998, the declassified version of Volume II was made public one hour after the House of Representatives voted to conduct an impeachment inquiry on President Clinton and just before House members were compelled to cease all other activity to resolve the budget crisis.
The narcotics trafficking by CIA during the Sporkin years as CIA General Counsel were further illuminated by the depositions of Tom and Desiree Ferdinand, son-in-law and daughter of Col. Al Carone, formerly of the CIA, Army and NYPD, filed that year in a lawsuit against the CIA that were maintained under seal until recently. The Sporkin years at the CIA were also illuminated by numerous reports of arms and narcotics trafficking in Arkansas during Iran Contra and related money laundering through the state housing agency, the Arkansas Development Finance Agency.
During this period, Vice President George H. W. Bush was in charge of all US enforcement and intelligence operations through the National Security Council, President Bill Clinton was the Governor of Arkansas, and Senator Hillary Clinton was a partner in a law firm that served Arkansas Development Finance Authority.
Judge Sporkin retired from the bench shortly before the Qui Tam was unsealed. Hearing transcripts for some of the most sensitive hearings on the qui tam and other hearings related to the targeting of Hamilton are missing or unavailable from court records.
